A 23 x 60 telescope (23 power magnification and 60 mm objective lense) originally used by the French Navy to facilitate signalling. Makers mark for SOM Paris (Société d'Optique et de Mécanique) from the middle of the 20th century. The focus ring has  adjustment ranging from +1 to -4. The extendable sunshade helps combat glare, particularly when looking over reflective water surfaces.

The engraved inscription "Demontage formellement interdit", is a statement meaning that officially you were not allowed to take the sight apart whilst it was in use with the navy.

The polished brass sections have been cleaned and then plated with a thin layer of gold to prevent tarnishing and minimise the need for cleaning. The conical aluminium tube has been stripped of black enamel paint and polished. The scope has then been mounted on a suitable bracket fitted to a period wooden tripod stand. The optics have been fully refurbished to the highest standards and the tripod comes with a newly made hardwood floor stand to provide stability.

Dimensions (telescope): 72.5 cm/28½ inches (length).
