An unusual stoneware match striker by Doulton with hallmarked silver collar, circa 1880. Makers mark to the base.

Dimensions: 8.5cm/3⅜ inches (diameter) x 7 cm/2¾ inches (height).

Doulton started in 1815 in Vauxhall, London followed by a location in Lambeth. Typically, at this time, they produced utilitarian stoneware including, bathroom essentials, storage jars, ale flagons, pipes and drains etc. The items they manufactured then evolved into art stoneware-pottery production, much like this match striker, and were marked as Doulton Lambeth.

In 1882 the company moved to a new factory in Burslem, in the heart of the Staffordshire potteries, and in 1902 a royal warrant was awarded, leading them to became Royal Doulton.
