Carved Mahogany Spitfire Model as Lighter

A splendid carved wood model of a Supermarine Spitfire, made as a lighter, on newly made milled aluminium stand. The metal cockpit canopy lifts off to reveal a wick and flint wheel with a screw fuel filler cap on the underneath of the aircraft. Great desk size model of one of the most iconic aircraft ever made. Showing a fair amount of detail; machine guns in the wings, cockpit canopy, engine exhausts and undercarriage.

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during and after World War II. Many variants of the Spitfire were built, using several wing configurations, and it was also the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war. The Spitfire was designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, which operated as a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong from 1928. After initial disappointments with an earlier design Mitchel and the Supermarine team used their experience with the Schneider Trophy winning seaplanes as a starting point. The Spitfire first flew in 1936 and first went in to service with '19 Squadron' of the RAF in August 1938.
