A fine Victorian leather cigar protector embossed with the makers name and date of design registration 'May 22 1844'. With a small external pocket to hold matches, a metal match striking plate fixed externally to one end and an internal sprung lever to secure the cigars in place. Case expands for differing lengths of cigar. Circa 1850.
Dimensions (when fully closed): 12.5 cm/4⅞ inches (length) x 6.75 cm/2⅝ inches (width) x 3.75 cm/1 inches (thick). Will take up to two cigars with maximum diameter of 2.5 cm/in excess of 50 ring gauge and expands to take a maximum length of 18.5 cm/7¼ inches.
