Silver Cigar Box with Enamel Flags

Glorious silver cigar box with enamel yachting flags to the lid, hallmarked Birmingham 1896. The enamel signalling flags to the centre of the lid spell out a message. The right hand burgee is that of The Royal Southampton Yacht Club and the left hand burgee is that of The Royal Southern Yacht Club; these are in fact one and the same. The Royal Southampton was founded in 1837 but in order to increase its catchment area the name (and the club burgee) were altered to the Royal Southern Yacht Club in the 1840's.
