John Collard Vickery was an influential figure in the retail of luxury goods at the turn of the century. Vickery and his then partner Arthur Thomas Hobbs bought the established stationer and booksellers William Griggs of 183 Regent Street in 1890. They expanded the stock to include jewellery and dressing cases as well as gold and silver lines.
The partnership with Hobbs was short-lived and was dissolved in 1891. Vickery however went from strength to strength expanding the Regent Street premises to include, at first, No.181 and then No.179 by the year 1900. He went on to obtain the royal warrants including HM the King, HM the Queen, HM Queen Alexandra, TRH the Prince and Princess of Wales.
