A stunning case made from reticulated 'Samorodok' silver. By silversmiths SJ Rose and Sons. Hallmarked, London 1966.
Dimensions: 8.8 cm/3½ inches (width) x 5.2 cm/2 inches (depth) x 1.5 cm/⅝ inch (height).
Samorodok is a Russian word meaning 'metal in its natural state'. This method of working silver was made most famous in Russia, by Fabergé, and is a very difficult technique to master.
Samorodok is achieved by heating the silver to a temperature just below its melting point before cooling it abruptly in water, the resulting finish resembling that of silver ore.
