An unusual cigar cutter covered with reticulated 'Samorodok' silver, hallmarked, London 1977. With steel blade by the famed knife-maker, Wüsthof Dreizack from Solingen, Germany. The back end of this cigar cutter also has a tool for opening the traditional cedar boxes that cigars are packaged in by manufacturers.
Dimensions: 14.75 cm/5⅞ inches (length).
Samorodok is a Russian word meaning 'metal in its natural state'. This method of working silver was made most famous in Russia, by Fabergé, and is a very difficult technique to master.
Samorodok is achieved by heating the silver to a temperature just below its melting point before cooling it abruptly in water, with the resulting finish resembling that of silver ore.
