An unusual 10 x 70 (10 power magnification and 70 mm objective lens) military monocular, by Toko (Tokyo Optical) of Japan, circa 1940. The right hand eye-piece is for viewing subjects at distance. The left hand eye-piece (no longer operational) was originally sighted on to an instrument attached to the left side of the scope showing a scale of elevation so the scope could be used for directing searchlights or artillery guns. Has integral shade on the front of the scope that slides forward and a 'quick sight' running along the top of the scope, for rough aiming.
The Japanese companies of Nikko and Toko were the main manufacturers of optics for Japan's military leading up to and during WWII. The scope has been stripped of it's original paint, the cast aluminium polished to a mirror finish and then mounted on a custom made cradle fitted to a adjustable height wooden tripod stand that is period to the scope. The optics have been fully refurbished to the highest standards. This spotting scope comes with a newly made hardwood floor stand to provide stability to the tripod.
Dimensions: 31.75 cm/12½ inches (length of scope without shade).
