Silver plate and glass recipe cocktail shaker, with integral strainer, named "The Barman". Made in the 1930's by Ghiso of Buenos Aires.
The removable glass liner has English cocktail titles and recipes in Spanish etched into it and etched around the middle is the statement, 'Mezclar con cuchara los cocktails de arriba - sacudir los de abajo - para todos anadia hielo.' This translates as "Mix the top cocktails with a spoon - shake the bottom ones - add ice for everyone."
This refers to the top and bottom windows on the sides of the shaker which each show the recipes for 12 different cocktails (24 in total) that can be viewed as you turn the glass liner.
The founding member of the Ghiso family emigrated from Italy to Argentina in 1890s, where, within a short space of time, Ghiso S.A. became the pre-eminent jewellery salon in Buenos Aires. Soon after, his two sons traveled to Paris and the firm opened two new branches, one in Paris and the other in New York. One son, Oscar, coordinated all business matters from Paris as well as arranging with designers to create jewellery in the current styles which was then also shipped to the other branches. The New York and Paris locations closed in the late 1940s. However, the store in Buenos Aires remained open until the 1960s.
