Red jasper belongs to the chalcedony mineral class and is a member of the quartz family. Jasper is primarily composed of silica with impurities providing its unique colours and patterns. Red jasper gets its rich brown-red colour from iron impurities and is typically opaque - somewhat unusual for a quartz mineral.
